I've been watching Leigh for over 50 years and in my opinion the current team are the best ever!

I agree with that.

Best ever? They've won the Northern Rail cup and the Championship...... when they win a real trophy like the Challenge Cup or the Super League, then I think you can come out with that statement lol!

Lets have some perspective. I too have supported Leigh for 50 years. Look at the standard of teams the 81/2 team were playing. 30 Games,all top division sides and lost only 5, all away. Look at the backs - Woods, Drummond, Donlan etc. Fantastic mobile pack like Wikinson, Martyn, Tabern, Clarkson. Then there was the toughest Leigh team ever of 70/71, who were never the massive underdogs made out against Leeds. We finished 4th that season! What a pack of forwards-Dave Chisnall, Ashcroft,Fiddler,Smethurst,Grimes etc. So a long time to go before the current team can be compared. Also, the best individual performance I ever saw was by John Woods was one Wednesday night in 1984, at Headingley when Leigh won 24- 18, and John scored all 24 points (6 goals and 3 tries), in a fantastic virtuoso performance. Does anybody else remember this match? 2nd best individual performance, the great Alex Murphy's first half hat - trick playing stand off half v. Leeds in 70/71 at Hilton Park, winning by 36-8 - great days!

Great days indeed Cheade I watched those games and Murp & Woody two World Class players both the 70/71 and 80/81 Teams where brilliant but since 1963 since I've been watching Leigh I've never seen a more exciting team than the current squad ..Pace Power & Unbelievable Team Spirit can't beat these lads for Excitment that's for sure
